Images of Chiang Mai (Doi Suthep)

Chiangmai is located about 700 km north of Bangkok, and is considered the second most important city in the country.

A Thai king took over a Mon settlement and 'founded' the city in 1296. The city became part of the larger kingdom of Lanna Thai. This area of Thailand fell under Burmese control later on, but was finally incorporated in the Thai kingdom by King Taksin in 1775.

Its most well known temple is Doi Suthep located on a 1676 high mountain, close to the city. Chiangmai is known to have a more tolerable climate, being located somewhat north and at an altitude.
